Not suitable for

Period delay tablets are suitable for most women aged 18–50 who are not currently taking a combined contraceptive pill. If you're already on the combined pill, you can delay your period by possibly taking two packs back-to-back—speak to your pharmacist or GP for advice if this is appropriate for you.

People using period delay treatment

How it works (the science)

How period delay tablets work

Norethisterone contains a synthetic version of progesterone, a hormone your body naturally produces. During your menstrual cycle, progesterone levels rise after ovulation to prepare your womb lining. When you don't become pregnant, progesterone levels fall—and this drop triggers your period.

Taking norethisterone keeps your progesterone levels stable, preventing the natural hormone drop that causes your womb lining to shed. Your period is essentially “paused” until you stop taking the tablets. Once you finish taking norethisterone, your progesterone levels return to normal and your period will typically start within 2–3 days. Your regular cycle should resume from your next period onwards.

How to take period delay tablets

How to take period delay tablets

Follow these simple instructions to effectively delay your period. Always read the patient information leaflet included with your medicine.

Dosage

Take one 5mg tablet three times daily (every 8 hours), starting 3 days before your period is due.

Schedule

Morning: 8am Afternoon: 4pm Evening: 12am (midnight)

Duration

Continue taking tablets for as long as you wish to delay your period, up to a maximum of 20 days for most women (27 days in exceptional circumstances).

Warning

Timing is crucial. You must start taking tablets at least 3 days before your expected period. If your period has already started, the tablets will not stop it.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s almost time for your next dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Missing doses may result in breakthrough bleeding.

Possible Side Effects

(may affect up to 1 in 10 women)

Like all medicines, norethisterone can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Most side effects are mild and resolve once you stop taking the tablets.

Mood changes, including feeling low
Nausea or upset stomach
Breast tenderness or discomfort
Bloating or fluid retention
Headaches, including feeling light-headed
Spotting or breakthrough bleeding
Fatigue or tiredness
Changes in appetite

Rare but serious side effects

seek immediate medical help

In rare cases, norethisterone may increase the risk of blood clots. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience:

Painful swelling in one leg (particularly the calf)
Sudden chest pain or difficulty breathing
Sudden severe headache or migraine
Vision problems or changes
Slurred speech or difficulty speaking
Collapse or fainting

Important: The risk of blood clots is higher if you are obese, smoke, have a family history of clots, or are immobile for long periods (such as during long-haul flights). Stay hydrated and move regularly during travel.

What to do if you experience side effects:

Most side effects are mild and temporary. If side effects are troublesome:

Speak to a pharmacist for advice on managing symptoms
Contact our clinical team through your Medy account
If side effects are severe or you're concerned, contact your GP or call 111
In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E

You can report side effects to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at
