How it works (the science)
How period delay tablets work
Norethisterone contains a synthetic version of progesterone, a hormone your body naturally produces. During your menstrual cycle, progesterone levels rise after ovulation to prepare your womb lining. When you don't become pregnant, progesterone levels fall—and this drop triggers your period.
Taking norethisterone keeps your progesterone levels stable, preventing the natural hormone drop that causes your womb lining to shed. Your period is essentially “paused” until you stop taking the tablets. Once you finish taking norethisterone, your progesterone levels return to normal and your period will typically start within 2–3 days. Your regular cycle should resume from your next period onwards.
Menstrual cycle
86%
of women experience complete period delay with no bleeding when using norethisterone correctly.
14%
may experience light spotting or breakthrough bleeding. Starting treatment at least 3 days before your expected period maximises effectiveness.

Possible Side Effects
(may affect up to 1 in 10 women)
Like all medicines, norethisterone can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Most side effects are mild and resolve once you stop taking the tablets.
Rare but serious side effects
seek immediate medical help
In rare cases, norethisterone may increase the risk of blood clots. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience:
Important: The risk of blood clots is higher if you are obese, smoke, have a family history of clots, or are immobile for long periods (such as during long-haul flights). Stay hydrated and move regularly during travel.
What to do if you experience side effects:
